Developing a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar sensor

Our client required us to design, manufacture and test a measurement solution using a FMCW radar architecture.

This was required to be a lower cost solution than the existing pulse radar method whilst achieving the client’s demanding performance specifications.

What we did

We designed the transmitter, receiver and waveform generating circuits, evaluated the performance and iterated the design to maximise performance employing our know-how in RF design.

We employed a low-cost solution to generate a linear waveform over a broad band that provided the high resolution needed for the application.

We then optimised the design to establish the maximum performance that could be achieved using low-cost components.

These designs are now moving into field trials following integration into the client’s existing sub-systems.

“Radar is a robust and versatile technology able to be deployed in harsh environments in a wide range of applications. Our work with this client further demonstrates 42Ts capabilities in delivering novel sensing techniques that are both high performing and commercially viable.”

Results for our client

42T’s structured development and scientific approach has given the client confidence in moving their project to the next phase of development.

Project achievements:

  • Successful project delivery enabling next stage field trials.
  • Design, manufacture and test of a prototype FMCW radar system to replace the current pulse radar.
  • Integration into client’s existing sub-system.
  • Validation testing proving required waveform generation, and transmitter and receiver performance.
